LAW 215: International Law

This guide is for students in Professor Toman's International Law course

Research Strategies

Two good books on international legal research:

Start with secondary sources (Encyclopedias, Monographs, Journal Articles)

One good source leads to others:

  • footnotes
  • other publications by the same authors -- books and journal articles
  • for monographs, check the subject headings that appear in the OSCAR record
  • for cases, use Shepard's and KeyCite

Use folders and note-taking capabilities of databases to keep your research organized

Update your sources

Quit researching when you keep seeing all the same sources

Ask for help: 408 554-4452,, Chat with a librarian, Schedule Appointment with Librarian.
