U.K. Legal Research

An introduction to print and electronic sources for researching law in the United Kingdom: England, Scotland, Wales, and Northern Ireland.

The U.K. and the E.U.

The United Kingdom joined the European Union in 1973; the U.K. voted to leave the EU in 2016. Research into U.K. law during its EU membership requires an understanding of the relationship between the U.K and the E.U. Some European Union law was automatically incorporated into U.K. law, U.K. law could not contradict U.K. obligations as a member of the European Union. For additional information about the European Union, see the Mabie Research Guide on European Union Law.

The United Kingdom has been a member of the Council of Europe since 1949. The European Court of Human Rights can interpret U.K. obligations under the European Convention on Human Rights.
